Alan Astruc

French canadian photographer Alan Astruc, takes beautiful photos. They are rich with a romantic enigmatic vibe. His style stems from a “desire to escape the kind of intellectualism I had to deal with when I studied literature.” Ha. Don’t we all Alan, don’t we all.
One Love (bono free)

Levon Biss spent 2 years traveling the globe photographing people playing soccer. The results are dramatic and beautiful. These are more documentary than sports photography. He’s also got a nice catalog of portrait and landscape. Check out the punk gallery too.
Sibling Rivalry
Vanessa Prager led me to Alex Prager. I’m assuming the two are siblings. And if they are, they should thank their parents for their talent laden genes. Regardless of biology and filial ties, Alex Prager takes some really beautiful photos. She’s got the makings of an a-list client roster, and the chops to match. She just had her first solo show, entitled Polyester. It is a harbinger of good things.
If this doesn’t effect you - you should worry.
Make sure your head is in a good place. Then spend some time looking at this photo essay about the lasting effects of the Chernobyl reactor. The disaster happened in 1986. It certainly isn’t news today, but this photo essay reminds us, regardless of our good intentions, we forget. Whether it’s Chernobyl, Katrina, or the Tsunami, we only “know” catastrophe’s for a few weeks, where the victims live it for a lifetime.
I don’t want you to walk into these blindly, they are very hard to look at. It’s worth it. Taken by Paul Fusco. Click here to view.
Feeling Brainy
His bio reads like an grant proposal. But regardless, Lucas Blalock’s photographs have a warmness to them that i find endearing. Skip the bio, enjoy the photos.
More than just hair and makeup

Mr Phillip Toledano explains his work better than i could. “… at age eleven, I got my first camera. I’ve been taking slightly odd pictures ever since… I also believe a photograph should be like an unfinished sentence.” His site is simple, and beautiful, all html, no-frills. The typography kills. Nice embellishments. He leads every gallery with clever and enigmatic copy. Like haiku’s, they set you up to be enthralled.
Naked Babies

I stumbled upon this photographer, Zena Holloway, who specializes in underwater photography. It’s a totally cool, weird specialty to have. We’re all familiar with the types of images that she takes, but that doesn’t make them any less beautiful. Like the above image, taking her subjects “out” of the water creates a surreal look that, even though we’ve all seen it before, is still quite effective. She has a link on her site that says “Waterbabies.” I clicked on it with some trepidation, fearing “Anne Geddes Underwater.” But the images are oddly intriguing (perhaps just because of the inescapable nirvana reference).
Can you guess what this is?
How ’bout now?

What about now?
It’s 2.3 million folded prison uniforms, equal to the number of Americans incarcerated in 2005. It’s also an example of Chris Jordan’a photography. It takes a sharp look at American culture by using statistics and everyday objects. The images themselves end up with simple beauty. They vaguely reference old color field paintings, but on closer look…
Eric Ray Davidson
Eric Ray Davidson is a photographer. I don’t really know a whole lot more about him than that. I don’t know who the people in his photographs are. I don’t know where you can find them. I do know they are rich and lush. They have a narrative quality to them that inspires wonder. The people in his portraits fell directly out of love stories. Spend a little time looking at these pictures. You’ll be better off for it.
Hint Magazine
Hint Magazine is a great site for staying on top of the fashion industry. The multimedia pictorials are filled with top notch photography and design. Come for the photography and stay for the book + music + art reviews. Right now they’ve got an interview with Harold Koda, chief of the Metropolitan Museum’s Costume Institute, and MR. the cooky Japanese artist. It’s that range and diversity that makes Hint a delight to read. The articles are well researched and the darn thing is just pretty to look at.
