Billy Joel

Billy JoelDee and I went to see Billy Joel the other night at the Excel center. I was unsure over what to expect. It was sure to be a pleasent evening out with my folks, but I was a little skeptical. Here’s the highlights. Old guitar tech sings Highway to Hell in pitch perfect Bon Scott voice while billy joel shreds on a guitar. Entire family of drunk folks two rows ahead of us, that really really love Billy Joel. Lot’s of dancing (or wriggling might be more appropriate).

He did the token three encores, finishing with the piano man. Predictable? Yes. Effective? Absolutely.

His departing words. “Don’t take any shit.” Not “goodnight st. paul.” Not “I miss my supermodel ex wife.” Literally, “don’t take any shit” and then he walks off stage. I have a new level of respect for the grizzly old piano man.

Superhopper, The Plastic Constellations, William Elliot Whitmore

SuperhopperThis saturday St. Paul will see a fury it hasn’t seen since Norm switched sides. Ok, so Superhopper has been known to play a show here or there, but it’s been a while and it’ll be good. Will Kermit and Kate’s recent nuptials dampen the on stage antics? We will have to see.

Playing with them are The Plastic Constellations. The first time I saw TPC I had just moved to Minneapolis, and some friends took me to a coffeeshop called the Firefox. It happened to be a TPC record release party. In that night I become one of the converted. I thought for sure they would be headlining MTV spingbreak by now, and though that hasn’t happened, they have put out some of my favorite rock n’ roll over the past few years. It’s always smart, clever and witty without being intentionally enigmatic.

On a different note. I heard Hockey Night is no longer. Long Live Hockey Night.

Jug’s Birthday

JugSweet rockshow coming up at the beloved Turf Club in St Paul, in honor of every bodies favorite grizzled ole’ teddybear Jug. You may know him from the door at the Turf, or the fourth stool from the left at the clown lounge. Skoal Kodiak, Big Timber, Falcon Crest, and the Danforths.

Tuesday May 2nd. $4. Me, Darcie and Tom made the posters. Who can argue with this line-up on a tuesday night. Make sure you get there to see the Danforths, they’re quirky and weird and art-astic.
